European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) inhabits coastal waters and may be exposed to hypoxia at different life stages, requiring physiological and behavioral adaptation. In the present study, we attempted to determine whether regulation of hemoglobin (Hb) gene expression plays a role in the physiological response to chronic moderate hypoxia in whole larvae and hematopoietic tissues (head kidney and spleen) of juveniles. Microplastics are present in marine habitats worldwide and may be ingested by low trophic organisms such as fish larvae, with uncertain physiological consequences. The present study aims at assessing the impact of polyethylene (PE 10-45µM) microbeads ingestion in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) larvae. Fish were fed an inert diet including 0, 104 and 105 fluorescent microbeads per gram from 7 until 43 days post-hatching (dph). Microbeads were detected in the gastrointestinal tract in all fish fed diet incorporating PE. Hemoglobins (Hb) play a critical role in satisfying the oxygen demand of vertebrate aerobic metabolism. The present study reports the characterization of the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Hb genes, including genomic organization, phylogeny, and spatio-temporal gene expression. These Hb genes are divided into two unlinked clusters, the “MN” cluster containing eleven genes (five Hbα genes named MN-Hbα1-5 and six Hbβ genes named MN-Hbβ1–6) and the “LA” cluster consisting of three genes (two Hbα genes named LA-Hbα1-2 and one Hbβ gene named LA-Hbβ1). Hypoxia episodes have been generally studied over the last decade for their lethal consequences in coastal areas, which are nurseries for several fish species. The possible long-lasting effects of non-lethal hypoxia exposures at larval stage are, however, poorly documented. The decrease in ocean pH that results from the increased concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) is likely to influence many physiological functions in organisms. It has been shown in different fish species that ocean acidification (OA) mainly affects sensory systems, including olfaction.
